Our times are demanding and exciting, with a whirlwind of change in practice. Increased competition, managed care, new technologies and an ever-expanding scope of practice challenge even the best-prepared practice.

While these words could very well reflect the sentiments of many today, they were, in fact, from my editorial in the inaugural issue of Primary Care Optometry News. It was February 1996, and SLACK Incorporated – publisher of Ocular Surgery News and three dozen other medical subspecialty periodicals – was embarking on a bold new journey into optometry. The mission was clear: provide easily accessible, well-balanced and timely coverage of topics most relevant to you, our optometric colleagues.

In that first issue of PCON, we covered the emergence of ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin in treating infectious keratitis, debated whether PRK or LASIK would ultimately prevail, detailed the critical considerations in optometric comanagement of surgical patients and introduced Xalatan as a potential heir apparent to beta-blockers in treating glaucoma. We also launched a special column called “World Wide Web Frequently Asked Questions.” How times have changed.

While these – and many other topics – have come and gone, they have been merely replaced with newer subjects and controversies. This month’s PCON provides advice running the gamut from controlling myopia to the feasibility of pharmacologically reversing presbyopia. From optimizing your social media efforts to protecting patient files from online security breaches. Add a case discussion involving chronic periorbital pansinusitis and commentary on short wavelength, high-energy blue light and you’ve got what has become representative of Primary Care Optometry News: diverse, timely and relevant.

As optometry’s challenges have changed through the years, so has PCON’s approach to addressing these issues. SLACK has evolved into Healio. A parent company – the Wyanoke Group – was created. Wyanoke cultivated its educational arm: Vindico Medical Education. Collectively, we publish periodicals, manuscripts and textbooks; provide coverage of hundreds of meetings annually; and produce daily news feeds across virtually every discipline in medicine. While PCON’s print version readership remains robust, the launch of Healio.com underscores our commitment to provide you – our colleagues – with what you need, when you need it.

On behalf of Healio and Primary Care Optometry News, I would like to thank our editorial board, colleagues who have contributed through the years and readers for their support. Certainly, our publication could never have grown without your willingness to share your knowledge and debate the issues. As we move forward, I can promise you that we are committed to providing fast, accurate coverage of breaking developments in clinical eye care. It was that way 20 years ago and it remains true today.
