DENVER – Alcon noted its 5 years of support for the Contact Lens Assessment in Youth team during a company-sponsored press conference here at the American Academy of Optometry meeting.

According to a company press release, Alcon has provided nearly $700,000 in unrestricted grant support since 2009.

“We have been able to isolate age as its own risk factor for contact lens complications, but also to focus the industry’s attention on compliance and a deeper understanding of real-world contact lens wearing experiences,” Contact Lens Assessment in Youth (CLAY) co-chair, Heidi Wagner, OD, MPH, FAAO, said in the release.

CLAY researchers had two presentations during the academy, one involving a risk assessment survey for soft contact lens wearers with adverse events and the other on a pilot study of patients with symptomatic corneal inflammatory events.

“For Alcon, we are able to use insights from this type of research to inform our own patient education efforts around contact lens hygiene, lens care compliance and general contact lens wear,” Eric Bruno, Alcon vice president and general manager for U.S. Vision Care, said in the press release.
