LAS VEGAS – Canon introduced ImageSpectrum, a system for managing images and diagnostic reports, here at Vision Expo West.

Jim Laux, senior manager of eye care for Canon, told Primary Care Optometry News that eye and health care are becoming more about patient data.

“Doctors are required to do more communication of data,” he said. “Test images need to be shared … safely.”

This “total management system” is HIPAA-compliant software that connects Canon instruments as well as competitor instruments.

“All images are on one screen, one instrument,” Laux said. “It links to the electronic medical record but is a repository for all images.”

Laux said that Canon puts the most relevant information on a “windshield report.”

The system has been in beta testing for 6months but should be available nationwide in mid-November, he said.

Laux said that the company also has a spectral domain optical coherence tomography system going through the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval process.

He said this system has 3-micron resolution and will be able to image the layers of Bruch’s membrane. It automatically realigns if the patient moves, taking 176,000 scans in 2 seconds.
