PHILADELPHIA – Alcon announced the launch of Air Optix Colors, a new color silicone hydrogel, here at Optometry’s Meeting.

The new lens is available in nine colors and recommended for a daily wear, monthly replacement schedule, Carla Mack, OD, MBA, FAAO, director of professional and clinical support for U.S. vision care at Alcon, said at a company-sponsored event.

“We want patients to see their best, feel their best and look their best,” Mack said. “Air Optix Colors does all three things.”

Mack noted that the cosmetic industry is worth $426 billion globally, and “this is a place you want to be.”

The lens is being marketed to the millennial woman, she said. These women spend a significant amount of money on beauty products, and they will be willing to pay for this lens.

Patients previously wearing the Air Optix sphere clear lens do not need to be refit for Air Optix Colors, Mack said.

Jim Murphy, vice president and general manager of U.S. vision care for Alcon, said the company will market heavily to the consumer.

Alcon is partnering with celebrity fashion stylist Ilaria Urbinati and actress Nina Dobrev to spread the word about the lens, through television commercials, a consumer website and social media.

“We’re going to bring the sexy back to contact lenses,” Murphy said. “Today is the day.”

Murphy is also urging eye care practitioners to consider having a beauty consultant in their offices and charging for fitting this lens.

“Doctors need to charge for their time, and patients will pay it,” he said.

Alcon’s Brent Christenson said that patients can “try on” the lenses through the product’s website by downloading a photo of themselves, then share it via social media.

Alcon’s Shantel Canty said this product provides an opportunity to drive patients to the eye care practitioner, including those who have not had an eye exam in a while. – by Nancy Hemphill, ELS
