UAB names Nichols as new dean
The University of Alabama at Birmingham announced in a press release that Kelly Nichols, OD, MPH, PhD, FAAO, a leading scientist on dry eye disease, was named dean of the school of optometry.
Nichols most recently served as a professor at the University of Houston (UH) since 2011.
While at UH, Nichols cofounded and served as the executive director for the Ocular Surface Institute, which focuses on bench-to-bedside research on ocular surface conditions, UAB reported. Prior to joining the faculty at UH, Nichols taught at the Ohio State University College of Optometry from 2000 to 2011.
According to the press release, Nichols’ research interests include dry eye, meibomian gland dysfunction, blepharitis, inflammation, impact of menopause on dry eye, dry eye diagnostics and therapeutics, tear proteomics and lipidomics, and quality of life.
She will assume the role June 25, according to UAB.
