Optometry Giving Sight announced that optometry students across North America raised more than $56,000 as a result of this year’s World Sight Day Student Challenge.

World Sight Day is an annual day of awareness to focus global attention on blindness and vision impairment. It is coordinated by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness under the VISION2020 Global Initiative.

According to an Optometry Giving Sight press release, NOVA Southeastern University raised a record-breaking $12,097. Using the Optoms Cycling for Sight model from the UK, the students at NOVA “cycled” their way across the U.S. on stationary bikes and in spinning classes and garnered donations all across the country through family and friends.

Illinois College of Optometry has been participating in the Student Challenge since its infancy, Optometry Giving Sight said. This college led the U.S. in optometry school donations. For 2013, students hosted a “dining in the dark” event, where attendees were blindfolded and able to experience an evening without their sense of sight.
