Study: IPad contrast sensitivity test convenient alternative
In a study to assess a new iPad-based letter contrast sensitivity test, researchers found that the test may be an appropriate alternative to existing assessment tools.
Kollbaum and colleagues tested 40 subjects using the Ridgevue Contrast Sensitivity Test for the iPad, the Pelli-Robson Test and the Freiburg Acuity and Contrast Test in a study published in Optometry and Vision Science. The subjects, 20 with normal sight and 20 with low vision, were tested monocularly for contrast sensitivity at 1 m while wearing their habitual correction.
The researchers found that all three tests showed good repeatability in terms of the 95% limits of agreement. They also found that while there was agreement between the iPad and Freiburg tests, the Pelli-Robson test gave significantly lower values.
"The iPad test showed similar repeatability and may be a rapid and convenient alternative to some existing measures," the authors concluded.
