SEATTLE – Heidelberg Engineering presented its new perimeter here at the American Academy of Optometry annual meeting.

John Flanagan, PhD, McOptom, FAAO, developer of the technology, told attendees that the Heidelberg Engineering Perimeter (HEP) is a “two-in-one” instrument with a standard automated perimeter (SAP) and flicker-defined form perimetry.

Clinicians can detect visual field loss at an early stage using the flicker-defined form and then manage progression at later stages with SAP, according to a company press release. The new instrument offers a 30-second screening strategy as well as white-on-white perimetry with an increased stimulus size, enabling full-range SAP.

The HEP is a “functional test adjunct to the Spectralis OCT,” the company stated.

“HEP utilizes the Heidelberg Eye Explorer software platform to combine analysis of structural damage detected by the HRT or Spectralis OCT and visual field defects as detected by the HEP,” the press release stated. “HEP’s Functional Change Analysis (FCA) applies existing knowledge of the random variability of visual field analyses and flags progressive visual field loss that exceeds the normal level of repeatability.”

The FCA provides information on significant change in probability maps for total deviation and pattern deviation, the company said.
