A study attempting to determine average vault over the central cornea in successful scleral lens wearers with severe dry eye found that precision actually does not seem to be an important component of the fit.

Among the 20 eyes (12 patients) that had been consecutively and successfully fit with a scleral contact lens, mean vault was 380 µm. No correlation was found between vault and corneal curvature or vault and visual acuity.

Distance between the posterior lens surface and cornea was measured with anterior segment optical coherence tomography.
