SAN DIEGO – In his closing remarks as American Optometric Association president, Ron Hopping, OD, MPH, said the group’s landmark accomplishment was contributing to the inclusion of the pediatric vision benefit in the Affordable Care Act.

Hopping, who practices in Houston, told the House of Delegates here at Optometry’s Meeting: “It is not only an essential benefit, but it has been clearly defined as a comprehensive exam, with materials.”

Because of AOA and its volunteers’ efforts, this will benefit millions of children across the country and will not be optional, he said.

“We also defended the Harkin amendment from strong opponents and we were a player in keeping Medicare fees from being reduced again,” Hopping added.

The outgoing president also noted legislative victories in Kentucky, Florida, Maryland, Arkansas, Arizona, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas and Texas over the past year.

“I’m pleased that the AOA’s State Government Relations Committee was able to play a role in helping many of these victories,” Hopping said. “Other states are in the midst of their strong fights, and I believe more victories are on their way.”

The association is beginning to roll out its Affordable Care Act preparation information for members.

“Other programs, such as the Patient Access to Optometry-reThink Eyecare data and analysis will help our members improve access to more patients,” he said.

The group’s workforce study will soon be finalized, Hopping added.

“We believe this study will encourage a more rational and logical approach to the opening and expansion of optometry schools around this country,” he said.

As Hopping moved into the position of immediate past president, Mitchell T. Munson, OD, of Highlands Ranch, Colo., became president. David A. Cockrell, OD, of Stillwater, Okla., was elected president-elect; Steven A. Loomis, OD, of Roxborough Park, Colo., was elected vice president; and Andrea Thau, OD, of New York, was elected secretary-treasurer.

Greg A. Caldwell, OD, of Duncanville, Pa., and Robert Layman, OD, of Toledo, Ohio, were elected as the newest members of the AOA Board of Trustees.

Those continuing to serve the board as trustees are: William T. Reynolds, OD, of Richmond, Ky.; Barb Horn, OD, of Washington, Mich.; Sam Pierce, OD, of Trussville, Ala.; and Christopher J. Quinn, OD, of Iselin, N.J.
