SAN DIEGO — Jennifer L. Smythe, OD, MS, FAAO, dean of the Pacific University College of Optometry, has been elected president of the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry, according to a Pacific University press release.

With this election, announced at Optometry's Meeting, Smythe has become the first woman president of the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO), according to the release.

In 2010, she became the first woman elected to the ASCO executive committee. Later that year, Smythe received the Optometrist of the Year honor from the Oregon Optometric Physicians Association, the release said.

Since her residency at Pacific University in 1993, Smythe has served in a number of roles within the College of Optometry, including that of professor, chief of contact lens services and associate dean for academic programs, according to the release.

Smythe is also member of the Primary Care Optometry News Editorial Board, a fellow in the American Academy of Optometry and a diplomat in the Section on Cornea and Contact Lenses.  She was also a charter board member of Women of Vision, the release said.
