B+L reports positive study results for solution, lenses

SAN DIEGO – Two studies conducted by Bausch + Lomb indicated patients were satisfied with the company’s Biotrue contact lens solution, a company executive told Primary Care Optometry News here at Optometry’s Meeting.

Mohinder Merchea, PhD, OD, MBA, FAAO, FBCLA, B+L’s director of Medical Affairs – North America, Vision Care said 140,000 study patients wearing all types of contact lenses and using different types of solutions were switched to Biotrue, and eight out of nine said they preferred Biotrue.

In another study, 93 subjects that were determined to have a high propensity for dropping out of contact lens wear were switched to Biotrue solution for 2 weeks. The lenses were not changed. Eight out of 10 patients said they would not drop out at the end of the 2-week period. After 6 months, it was found that 94% of those who said they would not drop out were still wearing contacts.

The company also reports patient satisfaction with their contact lenses.

Out of 34 patients who were fit with PureVision 2 lenses, eight of 10 stayed in the lenses and said they had a positive experience, according to senior brand manager Megan Schneider.

Patients who tried Biotrue OneDay contacts took an online survey, and nine out of 10 said they were happy with the lens, and eight of 10 said they were likely to recommend the practice, according to brand manager Jennifer Johnston.

“Biotrue OneDay lenses are intended for patients who are more into health and wellness and want maximum moisture and premium performance,” Johnston told PCON. “SofLens daily disposable is a great value lens attractive to moms for their children.”

Bausch + Lomb’s “Smartsightedness” campaign is directed to mothers, she said.
