The World Health Assembly approved the World Health Organization's 2014–2019 action plan for the prevention of blindness and visual impairment May 22, according to the World Council of Optometry.

The plan aims to improve eye health, reduce avoidable blindness and visual impairment and secure access to rehabilitation services for the visually impaired, according to World Council.

The target of this plan is to reduce the prevalence of avoidable blindness and visual impairment by 25% globally by 2019.

The World Council of Optometry participated in the consultations leading to the development of the action plan and will contribute to its implementation, the group said.
