A recently released report from the Vision Council highlighted findings from two separate surveys about sunglass use and ultraviolet light safety habits, which indicated that eye protection from UV rays is not a priority for U.S. consumers, according to a council press release.

The report stated that only 12% of adults ranked UV protection first as a consideration for a recent sunglass purchase. In Miami, a city that sees 255 days of extreme or high levels of UV, only 6% of shoppers ranked UV-protection most important when deciding on a pair of sunglasses.

Also, more than half of parents do not protect their children’s eyes with sunglasses, the release said. Nearly 30%, in fact, take no precaution to shield their children’s eyes from UV.

“More Americans are acknowledging the need for UV protection but there is a big disconnect when it comes to our eyes,” Ed Greene, chief executive officer of the Vision Council, said in the release. “While we may think we are doing a good job with protection, the truth is that we are not doing nearly enough.”
