Industry expert reports on new intraoperative guidance technology

PHOENIX – Advanced technology for refractive surgeons implanting toric IOLs is providing intraoperative information at the time of surgery, according to a presenter here at the Optometric Council on Refractive Technology symposium held prior to Academy 2012.
David W. Friess, OD, FAAO, a clinical research and market consultant from Glen Mills, Pa., reported on the ORA system from WaveTec Vision Systems.
The ORA/ORAnge system uses Talbot Moire interferometry for status measurements at the time of surgery, Friess said. “The surgeon can get an accurate reading of the refractive state of the eye at the time of surgery,” he said. “This is extremely valuable; it can be used in post-LASIK, post-PRK, post-RK, where it may be difficult to get accurate historical data on the eye. It gives the surgeon reassurance that they’re refractively close to the target they desire.
“I’ve been impressed at the speed, improvement and usability in this system as the years have progressed,” Friess continued. “It doesn’t interrupt the flow of surgery.”
Friess said surgeons who use this technology rely on it quite heavily.
“They may make changes in the lens power right there at the time of surgery,” he said.
Friess said the challenge is to reduce the number of parameters that affect the measurements at the time of surgery.
“ORA provides predicted residual refraction of the eye using a particular lens power,” he said. “The surgeon can cycle through different lens selections and make their adjustment based on that active guidance during surgery.”
