Funds provided to VOSH International by Optometry Giving Sight will allow the School of Optometry and Optics at the University of La Plata in Argentina to acquire the equipment necessary to establish a vision center, according to an Optometry Giving Sight press release.

The announcement follows the recent news that optometry has been officially recognized by the Argentinean government. La Plata University has offered a 5-year degree program in ocular optics and optometry for the past 11 years. The university campaigned to have the Argentina Ministry of Education recognize the qualification, according to the World Council of Optometry. Seven classes have already graduated from the university’s degree program.

“This is great news for the degree program and for the graduates,” Clive Miller, CEO, Optometry Giving Sight, said in the Optometry Giving Sight press release. “We hope that the equipment we have funded, thanks to the support of our donors and sponsors, will further strengthen the great work being done by the school.”

The vision center will provide affordable and accessible services to people in need in the community. It will also provide the basis for collaboration with other institutions in the region and help to promote the role of optometry and optometrists in primary eye health, the release said.
