LAS VEGAS – Modernizing Medicine launched an electronic medical assistant designed for optometrists and ophthalmologists here at Vision Expo West.
The electronic medical record is accessible via an iPhone, iPad, Mac or PC. The system automates all documents and adapts to an individual physician’s practice style, prioritizing his or her most frequent diagnoses and treatments via drop-down menus. The system also remembers how a doctor writes his or her prescriptions and procedures, so they do not have to recreate them each time they see a patient.
Modernizing Medicine Chief Executive Officer Daniel Cane told Primary Care Optometry News that the electronic medical assistant (EMA) was designed as a touch vs. keyboard system to save doctors and staff time.
“The technician can take a history without touching a keyboard,” he said.
Elliott Ziegelman, a regional manager with the company, said, “You only see what you need in the exam. Everything defaults to normal. You just change what’s not normal.”
The doctor’s 10 most common diagnoses appear, and the system recognizes what the doctor chose for treatment most often, Ziegelman said. The system indicates the proper reimbursement code and also recommends actions to increase your reimbursement. It also tracks your meaningful use.
The EMA system was first introduced in dermatology, and the company had 12% of the market in the first year, Ziegelman said. Now 50 eye care practices are using it.
Images can be attached to the record; referral letters can be generated with one click.
“It shows where the patient is in the office, with what technician, what tests have been ordered and any lab results,” Ziegelman said.
The system is cloud-based and updated about every 2 weeks as part of a monthly subscription.
