LAS VEGAS – EnChroma released line of advanced optical sunglasses for the estimated 10 million Americans that live with red/green color vision deficiency, according to a company press release distributed here at Vision Expo West.

Don McPherson, MD, vice president of EnChroma’s product development, developed the line while producing protective eye wear for laser surgeons.

“Our ‘a-ha’ moment came when I realized that the surgeons were taking the protective eye wear out of the operating room and using them as sunglasses at the beach,” McPherson said in the release. “The eye wear had a noticeable positive impact on the wearer’s color vision, explaining both increased performance differentiating tissue in the operating room and enhanced vividness of the natural world outdoors.”

The first products will be the Cx Series, which are available in both Rx and zero-power ANSI Z80.3 lenses. The EnChroma Cx is a super color-enhancing lens for general use to enhance color for individuals with normal color vision; the EnChroma Cx-D is an optical aid for deuteranomalous color vision deficiency to assist wearers who have difficulty differentiating colors; and the EnChroma Cx-PT is an optical aid for protanomalous color vision deficiency to assist wearers with decreased red sensitivity.

The UV blocking sunglasses are less than 30 g, including frames, and will be available in a variety of styles for men and women, with a children’s line to follow. The line will be available at select professional optical locations and at www.EnChroma.com.
