This photo of an 8-year-old Caucasian boy who presented for a vision exam prior to the start of school was chosen as the winner of this month’s “Ocular Photography Challenge.” Cory Steed, OD, of Las Vegas, said he discovered three iris cysts on the posterior nasal iris during a dilated exam. No bulging of the iris or other anomalies were noted. All other ocular and systemic findings were normal.

Dr. Steed said ultrasound confirmed the lesions were cystic in nature. “Not much is known of iris cysts but, given the presentation, I believe these represent primary cysts and likely will never need intervention,” Dr. Steed said.

Dr. Steed plans to follow the patient regularly for changes.

The image was taken with a Sony lipstick camera through Haag-Streit BC900 optics.

As this month’s winner, Dr. Steed will receive camouflage binoculars, provided by Kowa.
