KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. There appears to be no evidence to support that traumatic uveitis is prone to recurrence, according to a speaker here.

Although it is widely believed that traumatic uveitis does not recur and that secondary cases may be due to secondary causes or undetermined underlying disease, there are no published studies on the subject, Rebecca Manning, MD, said at Kiawah Eye 2010.
In a review of 31 patients presenting to the Storm Eye Institute between April 2008 and November 2009, no patients had a recurrence of their uveitis after initial resolution, Dr. Manning said. To allow for patients who were followed up by outside physicians, Dr. Manning contacted 20 of the patients for additional information.
The lack of recurrence in the series is not surprising, Dr. Manning said, because in traumatic cases there is no biological mechanism present in the eye to continue to cause inflammation. However, she said, the series is limited by small numbers and the limited follow-up of a mean 13.87 months.
