These photos of a 62-year-old white female who came to the office of Jeffrey R. Varanelli, OD, Warren, Mich., with a complaint of a “half moon” in her right eye were chosen as the winner of this month’s “Ocular Photography Challenge.” The patient stated that the initial onset was about 2 months prior, but said there are now two “half moons” in her vision.

Visual acuity was 20/25 OD and 20/30 OS. The patient has a medical history significant for lung cancer and is currently in a trial for a new medication. Anterior segment evaluation was normal, but the dilated fundus exam revealed a nevoid type lesion with overlying drusen inferior to the nerve and a solid choroidal infiltrate above the nerve, likely metastatic from her lung cancer.

Radiation treatment was recommended, which the patient will undergo. A Zeiss Visucam-NM was used to capture these photos.

As this month’s winner, Dr. Varanelli will receive an HA-2 Handheld Tonometer, provided by Kowa.

Submissions for the PCON “Ocular Photography Challenge” can be e-mailed to nhemphill@slackinc.com. They are judged anonymously by a panel of PCON Editorial Board members. Please provide a photo of at least 300 dpi and a 100-word description of the case, indicating what imaging system was used. Contestants are permitted to win once a year. Delivery of prizes may take up to 120 days.
