NEW YORK — PixelOptics announced the launch of the EmPower electronic focusing prescription eye wear at a press conference during International Vision Expo.

The electronic frames will be available in 12 styles, including multiple color options, and will feature composite lenses with a thin, transparent liquid crystal layer, microchips and micro-machine accelerometers. Other features of the waterproof frames include miniature rechargeable batteries and shock resistance. Wearers can operate the glasses in three different modes: manual on, automatic and manual off, according to a company press release.

Beginning in May, in a partnership with Aspex Eyewear and Panasonic Healthcare Co., the eyeglasses will be available first in Southeastern U.S., then will be distributed to the rest of the country by the end of 2011, the release said.
