WASHINGTON -- The Fairness to Contact Lens Consumers Act passed the House of Representatives Nov. 19 and the Senate Nov. 20. The bill now awaits Pres. Bush’s signature. Eye care providers will be required to provide their patients with their contact lens prescription. Providers will also be required to verify prescriptions within 8 business hours; if there is no response within that time, the prescription is presumed to be valid. Prescriptions will be valid for a minimum of 1 year or the minimum period required by state law, whichever is greater. A companion bill that requires the Food and Drug Administration to regulate plano color contact lenses as medical devices also passed the House.
