NEW YORK – Compliance rates for glaucoma treatment drop off significantly when the patient is prescribed three concomitant drugs, according to a recent study discussed at the PRIMARY CARE OPTOMETRY NEWS symposium here.

Presenter J. James Thimons, OD, cited the study, which found that on a treatment regimen of one drug, 82% of patients were found to be in compliance. This number was reduced to 71% for patients on two drugs and only 50% compliance for patients on one drug.

“We might ask ‘at what number of drugs would you start to explore surgical options?’” Dr. Thimons said. “I would say that number is three drugs.”
