CALABASAS, Calif. — The American Board of Clinical Optometry announced that it will begin accepting applications for ABCO Certification in Advanced Primary Care Optometry during the summer of 2011, according to an organization press release.

The American Board of Clinical Optometry (ABCO) has defined Advanced Primary Care as an optometric subspecialty in which the practitioner has demonstrated advanced training, education and experience, beyond that required for licensure, in the treatment and management of ocular disease and injury, with an emphasis in the diagnosis and treatment and/or management of ocular manifestations and effects of systemic disease, said the release.

Criteria requirements include completion of an Accreditation Council on Optometric Education accredited residency and a successful National Board of Examiners in Optometry's Advanced Competency in Medical Optometry examination, or status as a Diplomate in either the Primary Care Section or the clinical path Disease Section of the American Academy of Optometry, the release said.

"We believe either of these two pathways to certification ensure that the applicant has obtained substantial education, experience and expertise above and beyond that required for licensure and has passed examinations that clearly demonstrate their expertise in Advanced Primary Care Optometry," ABCO chairman and executive director Art Epstein, OD, said in the release.
