The recent passage of therapeutic pharmaceutical agent (TPA) legislation in my home state of New York is the perfect starting bell for an important new publication for optometrists, Primary Care Optometry News. The optometrist called on to diagnosis and treat disease is the target reader of Primary Care Optometry News, and the direction of health care delivery in the United States is our biggest ally. This pilot issue gives ample evidence of how we intend to accomplish our goal and why the effort is worthwhile.

DePaolis mug--- Michael D. DePaolis, OD
Editor, Primary Care Optometry News

Many of the people we have brought together will be familiar to you. Members of the Editorial Advisory Board are leaders in the field. The publisher of Primary Care Optometry News is also responsible for Ocular Surgery News, Ophthalmic Surgery, Journal of Refractive Surgery, Journal of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus and Journal of Ophthalmic Nursing and Technology. The editor-in-chief of Primary Care Optometry News, Keith J. Croes, continues as editor-in-chief of Ocular Surgery News and has long experience in ophthalmology.

The point is, we have brought them together. No other publication will offer better coverage of breaking developments in clinical eye care. We intend to assume a strong, independent voice in optometry. We promise columns and features that will improve your understanding of the drugs and devices necessary for state-of-the-art patient care. We will augment the print version of Primary Care Optometry News with an online World Wide Web site that will confirm for you the huge potential of the Internet.

You may also know me. I have long advocated the role of the optometrist in primary eye care, and have spoken at many meetings in the United States and abroad. Without a doubt, Primary Care Optometry News is one of the most challenging, exciting ventures to which I have lent my efforts.

The launch of Primary Care Optometry News comes at a crucial point in the history of American eye care. The realities of the market-driven, outcomes-based managed care revolution call for optometry and ophthalmology to work together as never before. So the turf battle ends here.

I will continue to advocate optometrists practicing to the fullest scope of the field, and to respect the role of ophthalmologists. The team we have put together, called Primary Care Optometry News, is uniquely positioned to carry out that vision.

The starting bell has sounded. We think we can help you finish strongly.
