On Sept. 1, Optometry Giving Sight will kick off its annual fundraiser, the World Sight Day Challenge. Funds raised during this campaign are used to give the gift of sight to those in developing countries who otherwise have no access to primary vision care and corrective eye wear.

Optometry Giving Sight (OGS) is a global fundraising initiative that specifically targets the prevention of blindness and impaired vision due to refractive error. Working with a worldwide alliance of optometrists and industry organizations, OGS funds long-term vision care for individuals in developing countries through the development of vision centers that provide routine eye examinations and distribute spectacles. OGS is currently funding vision programs in 18 developing countries including Sri Lanka, China, Haiti, Mozambique and Mexico.

The World Sight Day Challenge campaign ends Oct. 14 and is solely supported by donations from optometrists, optical professionals, ophthalmic companies, optometry students and patients. Practitioners may choose to donate a day of their exam fees, make a monthly donation or even offer a one-time monetary gift.

There are 670 million people around the world who are blind or visually impaired simply because they do not have access to an eye exam and a pair of glasses. Just $5 provides an eye exam and glasses for one person in a developing country. Learn more about Optometry Giving Sight by visiting www.givingsight.org or calling (888) OGS-GIVE.
