This photo of a patient who was using a wire brush drill bit attachment without safety glasses was chosen as the 2011 annual grand prize winner for the Primary Care Optometry News “Ocular Photography Challenge.” Chris DeRose, OD, of Columbia, Mo., said one of the bristles came loose and penetrated the patient’s cornea. The patient did not require surgery but was left with a central, full-thickness corneal scar.

Central retinal vein occlusion

The photo was taken with a Nikon D-70 105-mm micro lens with a Nikon close-up speed light.

As the annual grand prize winner for 2011, Dr. DeRose will receive a scanning laser ophthalmoscope, provided by Kowa.

Submissions for the 2012 contest can be emailed to nhemphill@slackinc.com. They are judged anonymously by a panel of Primary Care Optometry News Editorial Board members.

Please provide a photo of at least 300 dpi, a 100-word description of the case including what imaging system was used and the name of your home town. Photos may not have been previously published. You will be asked to grant permission to SLACK Inc. to publish your photo.

Contestants are permitted to win once a year. Beginning in January 2012, the monthly prize will be camouflage binoculars. Kowa provides the prizes, including one annual grand prize awarded to the winner chosen from among each round’s winners. Delivery of prizes may take up to 120 days.
