Girl initially presents with open globe injury
The ophthalmology service was consulted for an otherwise healthy 6-year-old girl who was hit in the right eye by her brother with a pen 3 days before presenting to the emergency room. The patient’s mother thought her daughter seemed fine immediately after the event. However, over the next few days, the child complained of increasing irritation in her right eye. The mother took a closer look and was alarmed when she saw a “brown bubble” on the right eye.
Visual prognosis poor in older patients with open globe injuries
Elderly patients with open-globe injuries have a poor visual prognosis, according to a study. The retrospective review included the charts of 90 patients who were 65 years or older and had open-globe injuries. Open-globe injuries were categorized as ruptures (83.3%) or penetrating lacerations (16.7%) from falls, accidental traumas, motor vehicle accidents and assault. The majority of injuries were ruptures caused by falls.
Anisocoria in a pediatric patient after bounce house accident
The ophthalmology service at Tufts Medical Center was consulted for a “blown pupil” in the right eye of a 2-year-old boy. He was admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit after falling approximately 15 feet from an unsecured bounce house that was lifted into the air by a gust of wind.
