OSN Europe: The new era of online learning in ophthalmology
The digital age offers exciting new potential for learning and sharing information and ideas in ophthalmology. Most of us remain unaware of resources that may be particularly useful for our practice. Helgi David Björnsson, MD, a young ophthalmologist from Oslo, Norway, has done the hard work for us and compiled a list of some of the best go-to sites. Particularly exciting is a growing trend to offer cutting-edge material, previously only available internally to institutions, for free as open access.
BLOG: A doctor’s review of the Apple Watch — Haptics aren’t just for IOLs anymore
Among us Apple enthusiasts, the year’s most anticipated release has been the Apple Watch, and after a week of wear, I’m impressed but eager to see significant enhancements that will benefit clinicians.
Technology the latest addition to OSN Editorial Board
It is my pleasure to introduce the new Technology Section to the Ocular Surgery News Editorial Board, along with the new Technology Section Editor William B. Trattler, MD. With so many emerging tools and evolving technology in ophthalmology, we set out to create a new section of early adopters to help keep readers informed of the latest advances in ophthalmology. The mission of the new section under Dr. Trattler’s leadership is not to review new technology, but to analyze and discuss the latest technologies and the best way to implement those technologies into real-world clinical practice. I would like to thank Dr. Trattler in working with me to identify and develop a stellar group of board members, who will help to continue our mission of being the global, definitive information source for ophthalmic professionals. We hope our readers will find the new section as exciting and interesting as I do, and I look forward to seeing new faces, features and articles in the Technology Section in future issues of Ocular Surgery News.

Proposal for stricter regulations in approval of medical devices in Europe sparks controversy
With an implementing act issued in September 2013 by the European Commission, the European Union seems to be moving toward more centralized, uniform and transparent regulations concerning the approval of medical devices across member states. The legislative proposal is aimed at ironing out inconsistencies in the current regulatory system to better protect patients from defective products such as PIP breast implants and metal-on-metal hip implants.
