Expert panel debates preferred strabismus surgery techniques
At the annual American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus meeting in New Orleans, OSN Pediatrics/Strabismus Section Editor Robert S. Gold, MD, led a round table discussion on surgical approaches to correcting strabismus. Each of the participants had a different approach to correcting esotropia in patients with a large disparity in distance/near vision, some operating on the near angle, some on the distance angle and some with nuanced differences in the amount of correction to perform. Then the panelists took a new look at plication vs. resection for strabismus surgery, an idea that is not new, but one that is getting more consideration as an alternative to resection.
Evolution of pediatric ophthalmology beneficial for patients, practitioners
The cover story in this issue of Ocular Surgery News is a round table chaired by our section leader in pediatric ophthalmology, Robert S. Gold, MD. 6-year-old boy presents with intermittent headaches
A 6-year-old boy was referred to the New England Eye Center with symptoms of intermittent headaches for the last 3 months. The patient and his mother described the headaches as occurring three to four times per week, located primarily frontal and “on top of the head,” that would become progressively severe, lasting 1 to 2 hours, occasionally associated with nausea. Initially, it was thought the headaches may be related to concentrated activities such as reading. However, the pain was now occurring more often without any notable aggravating factors.
