Study quantifies significant time spent documenting in EHRs
VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Like in other ophthalmic specialties, a significant amount of the pediatric ophthalmologist’s time is spent documenting in electronic health records, perhaps detrimentally so, according to a study presented here.
Premature infants without ROP still at risk for ocular pathology
VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Ocular pathology may be missed in premature infants with no or mild retinopathy of prematurity who are not followed up beyond 12 months of age, according to a scientific poster presented here at the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus meeting.

Una lactante de 4 meses de edad, previamente sana y nacida a término, fue presentada al pediatra con lagrimeo y secreciones de ambos ojos. La madre observó que esto había estado presente desde el nacimiento y no observó síntomas asociados. Durante el examen, el pediatra observó un desarrollo normal y lagrimeo bilateral. A la niña se la diagnosticó con obstrucción del conducto nasolagrimal. Se le recomendaron masajes nasolagrimales y compresas tibias.

Uma criança de 4 meses previamente sadia e de gravidez a termo foi apresentada ao pediatra com lacrimejamento e secreção em ambos os olhos. A mãe observou que isso estivera presente desde o nascimento e que não notara nenhum sintoma associado. Ao examinar, o pediatra observou um desenvolvimento normal e o lacrimejamento bilateral. A criança foi diagnosticada com obstrução do ducto nasolacrimal. Foram recomendadas compressas quentes e massagem nasolacrimal.

At the annual American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus meeting in New Orleans, OSN Pediatrics/Strabismus Section Editor Robert S. Gold, MD, led OSN board members in a discussion of what they are doing more of or differently now than in the past within their own practices. Whether more often offering surgical solutions for small angles of strabismus or stable diplopia in older adults, or enhancing the patient experience using EHR software, the round table participants are taking their practices in new directions.
Pediatric ophthalmologists likely to testify in abusive head trauma case at least once
On average, a pediatric ophthalmologist sees 2.5 cases of probable abusive head trauma per year and will likely be subpoenaed in such a case 1.25 times in his or her career, according to a survey.

The mother noted this had been present since birth and did not note any associated symptoms. On exam, the pediatrician noted normal development and bilateral tearing. The infant was diagnosed with nasolacrimal duct obstruction. Warm compresses and nasolacrimal massage were recommended.

These infants almost universally require oxygen supplementation, and both excess oxygen and hypoxia can contribute to the disease.
