So it makes sense that ocular surface disease would be more prevalent in patients with glaucoma, but there are many other things that go beyond just the age association. In particular, and most importantly, glaucoma patients tend to use topical drops for treatmentone or several eyedrops on a daily basis, chronically, for multiple years.
The Economic Burden of Dry Eye Disease
The public health and economic burdens of dry eye disease can be characterized in a number of ways. The public health burden is typically protrayed by the prevalence of the condition, with details for specific subpopulations of interest. The economic burden is primarily described in terms of its impact on workplace productivity,1-3 medical care spending (either covered by a third party or out-of-pocket),1,4-7 and impact on health-related quality of life.2,8

Corneal Irregularity in a Contact Lens Wearer
A 30-year-old, longtime wearer of soft contact lenses presents with complaints of decreased vision in both eyes. He first presented to his prescribing optometrist 6 weeks ago. His contact lens wear was discontinued, and he was referred to an ophthalmologist for evaluation of dry eye, an unspecified corneal problem. Conservative management was unsuccessful, and the addition of topical cyclosporine and artificial tears 1week prior was of no benefit. Visual acuity with spectacle correction was 20/20 and 20/25 in the right and left eyes, respectively. Intraocular pressures were normal, and corneal thicknesses were 562 mm and 563 mm in the left and right eyes, respectively. Slit lamp examination is as shown in the figure.

Dry eye disease is one of the most common ophthalmic conditions in adults in the United States. A consensus definition and rational classification system (Figures 1 and 2) have recently improved the approach to its diagnosis and management.1 New tools for evaluation and recommendations for their use and interpretation provide even better approaches to the diagnosis and management of the condition.
