‘Chopstick’ technique aids IOL implantation in broken posterior capsule cases
The “chopstick” technique is a simple, safe and effective way to implant an IOL into the ciliary sulcus in the presence of a posterior capsular rent. The chopstick technique refers to the IOL being held between two instruments — a globe stabilization rod and a Y rod — and inserted through either port. The IOL is then maneuvered into the sulcus. As the Y rod inserted through the side port is present at all times posterior to the IOL supporting it from beneath, the chance of the IOL falling into the vitreous is absent during all steps. This technique is also useful for optic capturing in the presence of a rent.
