RGP lens wearers show eye blink variations with 3 o'clock, 9 o'clock staining
While experiencing 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock staining, rigid gas permeable contact lens wearers exert more eye blinking attempts and demonstrate fewer complete eye blinks and more incomplete eye blinks compared with lens wearers with minimal staining and non-lens wearers, according to a study. Contact lens fit and corneal coverage may influence these incomplete eye blinks.

Study shows soft contact lens wear does not increase myopia in children
The use of soft contact lenses does not appear to accelerate myopic progression in children. As part of a large study, researchers found that long-term myopic progression was statistically greater in contact lens wearers than in spectacle wearers, but the difference was not clinically significant. These results, combined with earlier data on the safety of soft contact lenses in children, make a strong case that children can safely wear soft contact lenses.
Tonometry yields accurate IOP through silicone hydrogel lenses
Accurate measurement of IOP by Goldmann applanation tonometry through a silicone hydrogel contact lens may be attainable without the need for patients to remove their contact lenses, according to a cohort study by researchers in the United Kingdom. Previous studies investigating IOP through conventional soft therapeutic lenses confirmed that accurate IOP could be recorded in normal eyes and in eyes with abnormal anterior segments. Obtaining accurate measurements through soft contact lenses, however, can be influenced by factors such as water content and center thickness of the lens.
RGP contact lenses may increase levels of inflammatory molecules in keratoconus patients
Wearing rigid gas permeable contact lenses appears to stimulate overexpression of interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor, intercellular adhesion molecule 1 and vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 in the tears of keratoconus patients, a prospective study found. In addition, these increased levels of inflammatory molecules are higher in patients with severe keratoconus.
Grading cases of contact lens-related microbial keratitis can aid comparison of disease burden
When comparing disease burden among cases of contact lens-related microbial keratitis, using a clinical grading system to rank disease severity can help identify patients who might be of noninfectious etiology or patients with a microbial cause of low virulence and morbidity, according to a study.

Some of the specific recommendations, which were presented in Washington, D.C. in June, include a warning against reusing solutions, exposing contact lens cases and contact lenses to water, and not rubbing and rinsing lenses.
