Good visual, refractive results seen with Tecnis Eyhance in previously treated myopic eyes

Key takeaways:

  • Patients previously underwent LASIK, RK or PRK.
  • The Tecnis Eyhance IOL showed positive visual and refractive outcomes.

LOS ANGELES — The Tecnis Eyhance IOL yielded positive visual and refractive outcomes in patients with myopia who underwent previous LASIK, RK or PRK, according to a speaker here.

At the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting, Abinaya Thenappan, MD, said that the Tecnis Eyhance (Johnson & Johnson Vision) is a strong candidate for post-refractive eyes because of its negative spherical aberration to balance out the positive spherical aberration of a virgin cornea and small central add power to enhance depth of focus. She presented the results of a retrospective review that investigated 339 eyes of 227 patients, of which 93% underwent LASIK, 6% underwent RK and 1% underwent PRK.

“Our outcomes were mainly visual and refractive and just looking at how they did after surgery,” Thenappan said.

At 1 month after implantation, 89% of eyes that underwent LASIK or RK had uncorrected distance visual acuity of 20/30 or better, while more than 91% had corrected distance visual acuity of 20/30 or better at 3 months. Manifest refractive spherical equivalent was “slightly myopic postoperatively,” with 72% of eyes within ±0.5 D at 1 month after surgery, Thenappan said.

“Despite their refractive error, they did quite well, which is what we were expecting given the refractive forgiveness of this particular lens,” she said.

The enhancement rate was 1.2%, with these four eyes undergoing an IOL exchange.

“There are millions of patients who have undergone laser vision correction, and as these patients slowly start to approach cataract surgery age, surgeons have to have strategies to be thoughtful about their IOL selection in these eyes,” Thenappan said. “In our study, we found that Tecnis Eyhance showed good visual and refractive outcomes in these post-refractive eyes.”
