VIDEO: Gene therapy shows promise for treatment of wet AMD

KOLOA, Hawaii — In this Healio Video Perspective from Retina 2025, Allen C. Ho, MD, discusses recent breakthroughs demonstrating that gene therapy is a viable option for treating wet age-related macular degeneration.

According to Ho, gene therapies administered intravitreally or in the subretinal space can effectively deliver transgenes and spur the growth of therapeutic proteins.

“We have really strong evidence from multiple programs ... that administering these transgenes in those spaces can produce durable, therapeutic levels of these anti-VEGF therapeutics so that the eye makes its own medicine,” Ho said.
