NEW YORK — In this Healio Video Perspective from OSN New York, John P. Berdahl, MD, shares pearls on how to decide between LASIK or PRK for patients who previously underwent cataract surgery.

While LASIK traditionally shows better outcomes for these patients, Berdahl recommends that ophthalmologists incorporate epithelial thickness mapping into the patient’s management.

“If the epithelium is irregular, that is going to be incorporated into the manifest refraction, and that is going to plan our laser treatment,” he said. “If we’re wiping off the epithelium with the PRK and it heals back differently, or even smoothly, then we are going to have less predictability and less accuracy with our PRK enhancements.”
