BARCELONA, Spain — In this Healio Video Perspective from the Euretina congress, Bart Leroy, MD, PhD, speaks about the overlapping features of uveitis and inherited retinal dystrophies.

The substances that are liberated into the intercellular space because of cell death provoke a low-grade inflammation that can be interpreted as uveitis, Leroy explained.

He discussed clues to differentiate between inherited retinal dystrophy (IRD)-related and uveitis-related manifestations and explained what genes are involved to clarify the diagnosis at a molecular level.

“When you see a case of potential uveitis and you are in doubt as to whether this would be an overlap syndrome with IRDs, do not hesitate. Have some sort of a low trigger to get a full medical screening on the one hand but also include molecular screening,” he said. “You will spare patients who have inherited retinal disease from having years and years of anti-uveitis treatment.”
