BARCELONA, Spain — In this Healio Video Perspective from the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting, Gábor B. Scharioth, MD, PhD, speaks about the advantages of low IOP phacoemulsification.

“There is more and more evidence presented in studies that show low IOP has a high impact on the efficiency of cataract surgery,” he said.

Less phaco power and less aspiration time, with reduced overall surgical time, are needed when moving to a low, near physiologic IOP setting, in the range of 35 mm Hg to 20 mm Hg. This is possible with the latest-generation phacoemulsification machines, Scharioth said.

“If you have availability of these latest technologies like the Centurion with Active Sentry (Alcon), then please rethink your IOP settings because it is not more difficult or more dangerous to lower the IOP. ... It’s actually improving your outcomes and increasing your speed of surgery and turnover,” he said.
