VIDEO: Avoid refractive surprises by treating ocular surface before cataract surgery
CHICAGO — In this Healio Video Perspective from the AAO meeting, Lisa K. Feulner, MD, PhD, explains why surgeons must treat the ocular surface before refractive cataract surgery and shares her algorithm for management.
According to Feulner, most patients who undergo cataract surgery have some form of undiagnosed ocular surface disease before surgery. When left untreated, this may cause inaccurate measurements both before and after surgery, which can lead to refractive surprises.
“It’s very important to identify the risk factors, the disease factors and come up with a plan,” she said. “Treat the ocular surface before cataract surgery so you’re not trying to backpedal and save something that leaves the patient with the impression that you did something wrong, even if you’re the greatest surgeon out there.”
