CHICAGO — In this Healio Video Perspective from the AAO meeting, Calvin Roberts, MD, program manager at the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health, discusses two “moonshot” ophthalmology programs from the organization.

The first is the Transplantation of Human Eye Allografts (THEA) program, which aims to restore vision through whole eye transplantation. The second is the Ocular Laboratory for Analysis of Biomarkers (OCULAB) program, which launched during the meeting with the goal of developing a tear-based biomarker measurement system.

“This is going to look like a punctal plug that goes in your lower lid and is continuously measuring your tears and various biomarkers within your tears and integrating that with your watch or other wearables to give a whole picture of your health,” Roberts said.
