I. Howard Fine, MD, esteemed ophthalmologist, dies

I. Howard Fine, MD , an internationally recognized leader in ophthalmology and past president of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, died on Aug. 29, according to a Facebook post from his practice.

Fine was a clinical professor of ophthalmology at Oregon Health & Science University and was retired from Drs. Fine, Hoffman & Sims, according to his practice biography.

Richard Lindstrom, MD

Fine attended undergraduate training at Massachusetts Institute of Technology before completing his medical and ophthalmology training at Boston University Medical Center. He went on to work in private practice in Eugene, Oregon, for more than 40 years.

Fine was the recipient of numerous honors over the course of his career, including the Charles D. Kelman Lecture from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Innovator’s Lecture from the ASCRS. He was also a member of the ASCRS Hall of Fame.
