BARCELONA, Spain — In this Healio Video Perspective, Richard Packard, MD, the ESCRS 2024 Heritage Lecture speaker, commemorates 75 years since Harold Ridley implanted the first IOL.

His lecture, “High Wire Act to the Standard of Care — Charlie Kelman and the History of Phacoemulsification,” recounted the creative thinking, challenges, battles and successes through which phacoemulsification has become the standard of care in cataract surgery.

To mark the occasion, the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons put together a display with videos and graphic panels and recreated a consulting room and an operating theater from the 1940s.

“I think this is very important because, in courses I have given recently, I’ve asked young people whether they’d ever heard of Harold Ridley, and the answer has been no,” Packard said.
