BOSTON — In this Healio Video Perspective from the ASCRS meeting, Brandon D. Ayres, MD, ABO, overviews surgical techniques that offer an alternative to corneal transplantation for the treatment of keratoconus.

Two interesting innovations are corneal allogenic intrastromal ring segment implantation and corneal tissue addition keratoplasty. In addition, the IC-8 Apthera small-aperture IOL (Bausch + Lomb) has been used in combination with intracorneal ring segments and collagen cross-linking to treat keratoconus in the cataract age range, according to Ayres.

“In my own experience, this IOL has been both a blessing and a curse,” he said. “If you have the right power, it’s worked very well, but if you are going to significantly defocus the patient, they may not be happy with their vision.”
