So, we are in an exciting time of innovation and treatment options for patients with neovascular macular degeneration. And optical coherence tomography has transformed our ability to detect and make a diagnosis of exudation, exudative macular degeneration, alongside tools like Fluorescein Angiography and OCT Angiography. For certain patients, the 4C home is a great screening option, and we will look forward to home OCT capabilities after seeing promising findings in research studies, we know that early diagnosis leads to overall better outcomes, and there continue to be ongoing efforts on early detection, and allowing for more personalized care. Over time, we'll have aggregate data from these instruments, and that will provide valuable information, and the potential to couple with AI technology for grading, et cetera. Once we have treatments for geographic atrophy, that is advanced dry AMD, and if incorporated into clinical practice, I'm interested to see how we can develop screening and imaging algorithms for patients that may require treatment for both dry and wet. And in the clinical trials for these advanced dry AMD drugs, we saw a signal for development of Choroidal Neovascularization in these patients being treated, so a combined and standardized approach may be necessary for a subset of patients, and that will require us to rethink our treatment algorithms and patient flow through our clinics. But it's exciting to have new treatments, so we'll look forward to that.

Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss and blindness in older Americans, according to the CDC.

Healio spoke with Ferhina S. Ali, MD, MPH, a vitreoretinal physician and surgeon with the Westchester Medical Center Health Network and an assistant professor at New York Medical College, about how early diagnosis of AMD can help protect the vision of patients.

“We know that early diagnosis leads to overall better outcomes,” she said.

Here, Ali discusses current screening options, as well as the future of screening and diagnosis.
