WAILEA, Hawaii — In this Healio Video Perspective from Retina 2024, Daniel Zhu, MD, discusses outcomes of chandelier-assisted scleral buckling in rhegmatogenous retinal detachments.

Zhu said using a chandelier light helps improve detection of possibly previously missed retinal breaks on prior exams. In a meta-analysis, Zhu and colleagues found that the success rate for the procedure was around 91.7% in 30 studies.

“We also compared the chandelier scleral buckling to the standard technique using the indirect and found that between the two techniques there was no statistically significant difference,” he said. “We also then compared the operative times between the two techniques and found that the chandelier scleral buckling technique on average was a little over 18 minutes faster compared to the standard indirect technique.”
