ROME — In this Healio Video Perspective from the FLORetina-ICOOR meeting, Albert Augustin, MD, speaks about the beneficial effects of metformin on age-related macular degeneration.

Metformin is a commonly prescribed drug for type 2 diabetes. In recent years, it was studied as an anti-aging drug, influencing many biochemical pathways involved in age-related changes.

“By accident, many people found that it seems to decelerate AMD progression,” Augustin said.

He recently published a paper on this topic in Aging Pathobiology and Therapeutics.
