'Truly an honor’: Steven C. Schallhorn, MD, receives Philip M. Corboy Award

WAILEA, Hawaii — Steven C. Schallhorn, MD, was honored with the Philip M. Corboy, MD, Memorial Award and Lecture for Distinguished Service to Ophthalmology here at Hawaiian Eye 2024.
“It is truly an honor to take this,” Schallhorn said. “When I look at the past recipients of this award, I am in awe of them.”
The award was created in 1986 by Corboy’s son, John M. Corboy, in his father’s memory, and is presented each year at the Hawaiian Eye Meeting. The award serves to honor an ophthalmologist who exemplifies a career of excellence in service to their patients and peers. This year’s award was presented to Schallhorn by Frederic Tiplady, MA.
“I first met Steve when he pushed through a navy program to provide the best vision possible for service members — not just pilots and potential pilots, but Marines and soldiers engaged in combat in two different wars at the time,” Tiplady said. “He was a study participant in the famous Navy SEAL program, which was instrumental in the FDA approval of the excimer laser — all while he was still a resident.”
Schallhorn founded the Department of Defense refractive surgery program after serving as a Navy pilot.
“Steve wanted to create a program that was adopted by the Navy, the Army and the Air Force and resulted in the treatment of thousands of those that go into harm’s way,” Tiplady said.
Schallhorn discussed his admiration for Phillip M. Corboy’s military service.
“Phillip Corboy was a navy flight surgeon in World War II, and served with distinction,” he said.
“We are very blessed to be in this profession,” Schallhorn said. “That we save eyes, save sight and improve sight — it’s really incredible.”
