In this Healio Video Perspective from the Retina Society meeting, Carol Shields, MD, describes an interesting case she saw in her office.

Shields said a middle-aged woman came in with dense, rapid-onset cataracts.

“Someone thought she had a tumor in one of her eyes, but we couldn’t even see the tumor. The cataracts were so dense,” she said.

After cataract surgery and further evaluation, Shields and colleagues saw signs of bilateral diffuse uveal melanocytic proliferation.

“She had paraneoplastic syndrome in her mouth and in both eyes in the fundus, and believe it or not, that was the cause of her fast-onset cataracts,” Shields said. “She couldn’t see because of this paraneoplastic syndrome.”
